Pimp My School was part of the Ministry of Education's Artists in Schools programme, it only ran for two years until the National Party got into power and decided to cut the programme. I was artist in residence at Dargaville High School for a term in 2009, working with the whole of Year 10, about 60 students.
The idea for the residency was to explore the new curriculum and find creative ways to implement various aspects from it, such as connecting with the local community. We started by looking at ideas to improve the school environment and then developed a whole range of different projects initiated by the students, these ranged from UFO abductions to a series of murals. The photographs below are just a few of the ideas and projects the students undertook.
